| Costa Rica's President Chinchilla Meets with Yang Jiechi |

On August 1, 2010, Costa Rica's President Laura Chinchilla met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in San Jose. Chinchilla asked Yang to convey her greetings to President Hu Jintao. She said since the establishment of diplomatic ties 3 years ago, bilateral relations have been developing continuously. The Costa Rican people hold friendly feelings towards China and thank for China's help. Costa Rica is accelerating its national economic growth and deems China its important cooperative partner. She said her country hopes to learn from China's successful experience to advance cooperation on economy, trade, financing, clean energy and transportation infrastructure construction and welcomes Chinese businesses to invest in Costa Rica. Chinchilla said Costa Rica actively participates in the efforts of the international community to cope with climate change and realize the UN Millennium Development Goals and hails China's important role, adding that her country is ready to enhance cooperation with China. Yang conveyed good wishes of President Hu to Chinchilla. Yang said though the two countries established their diplomatic ties only three years ago, bilateral ties have been developing very well. Yang called Costa Rica a good friend and partner of China in Latin America and thanked for Costa Rica's adherence to the one-China policy and its attaching great importance to developing China-Costa Rica relations. China is ready to maintain high-level exchanges with Costa Rica, expand humanities contacts and deepen mutual understanding and friendship. He urged both sides to take the opportunity of the signing of China-Costa Rica free trade agreement and make best use of complementary advantages to push economic and trade cooperation to a new level. China is ready to enhance cooperation with Costa Rica on major international issues and safeguard common interests of both countries and developing nations at large. On the same day, Yang held talks with his Costa Rican counterpart René Castro Salazar, exchanging views mainly on bilateral pragmatic cooperation. Both sides also signed an economic and technological cooperation agreement between the two governments. Yang also met with former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez. |
