Yang Jiechi Holds Talks with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Peiris

On August 12, 2010, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks in Beijing with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris who is here for an official visit. Both sides exchanged views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

Yang said China and Sri Lanka are friends of mutual trust as well as partners sharing weal and woe. China-Sri Lanka relations have continued to maintain sound development momentum since this year, with frequent exchanges and contacts in all areas and deepening pragmatic cooperation. The Chinese government attaches great importance to developing comprehensive cooperative partnership with Sri Lanka, and is ready to work with Sri Lanka to consolidate traditional friendship, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and inject new connotations and vitality into bilateral ties based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

Peiris said both sides have always shown mutual understanding and support for each other since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Peiris also expressed appreciation of China's support for Sri Lanka's efforts to safeguard independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as its precious assistance to Sri Lanka. He said as Sri Lanka is facing new opportunities for its domestic economic and social development, the Sri Lanka-China relationship has great potential to develop. The Sri Lankan government is willing to work together with China to consolidate and deepen the traditional friendship.
