| The 6th Beijing-Tokyo Forum Opens in Tokyo |

On August 30, 2010, the Sixth Beijing-Tokyo Forum, which was co-organized by China Daily and Japan's Genron NPO, opened in Tokyo. During the one-and-a-half-day session, participants will have in-depth discussions centering on the theme: "the future of Asia and the role of China and Japan", and contribute their wisdoms on effectively removing the misconceptions and prejudices and enhancing understanding and mutual trust between the two countries. State Councilor Dai Bingguo sent a letter of congratulation to the Forum on behalf of the Chinese government. Director of the State Council Information Office Wang Chen, Chairman of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee Li Zhaoxing, Chairman of the CPPCC Foreign Affairs Committee Zhao Qizheng, Chairman of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Chen Haosu, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, and Chairman of the Japan-China Friendship Association Koichi Kato attended and addressed the forum. State Councilor Dai said in the congratulatory letter that the Beijing-Tokyo Forum has been successfully held for five sessions since 2005. Its international influence and recognition has been rising steadily and it has become one of the most important public communication platforms between China and Japan. At present, China and Japan shoulder an important mission of advancing regional cooperation in Asia. This session of the Forum has selected "the future of Asia and the role of China and Japan" as the theme, which reflected the common expectations of the two governments and peoples. It will play a positive role in promoting the healthy and stable development of China-Japan relations. Director of the State Council Information Office Wang Chen stressed in his speech that the two governments highly value the unique and important role played by the media in the strategic and mutually-beneficial relations between China and Japan and will strongly support and aggressively push the exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two countries. He said that the media of both countries should, from a strategic and long-term perspective, pay more attention to the positive progress in China-Japan relations and introduce the growing China-Japan relations to the public in a truthful, comprehensive and objective manner. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku spoke positively of the role of the Forum. He said that the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, since its creation in 2005, has witnessed and provided strong impetus for the development of Japan-China relations. Japan-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships of Japan. Japan and China need to further increase the understanding between the people and pool the wisdoms of the elites from different communities to overcome current difficulties and boost the healthy growth of Japan-China relationship. Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda spoke highly of the important role of the Forum in promoting the development of Chinese-Japanese relations and indicated that the two countries should, proceeding from a long-term and overall perspective, increase mutual understanding and promote mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. This session of the Forum consists of 5 sub-forums: political, economic, media, local, and security sub-forums. There will be more than 800 guests from different communities of the two countries attending the session and having discussions on various aspects of China-Japan relations. The Beijing-Tokyo Forum was launched and organized by China Daily and Japan's Genron NPO. It is an elite exchange platform created by China's media and academic communities and Japan's civil society to promote China-Japan relations and enhance the mutual understanding between China and Japan. The purpose and objective of the Forum is to influence and lead public opinion in both countries through official and civil interactions and strengthened communication. The Forum, through nearly six years of development, has gradually increased its impact. |
