On the morning of September 8, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Thomas Donilon, Deputy Assistant to the U.S. President for National Security Affairs, and Lawrence Summers, Director of the White House National Economic Council, at the Great Hall of the People.

Furthering the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship is more important than ever before, as the world economic recovery and growth are still facing unstable and uncertain factors and various global challenges are becoming more prominent, Hu said. He called for China and the United States to view and advance their bilateral relationship from a global and strategic perspective.

"China and the United States should adhere to the general direction of building the positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century, make unremitting efforts to enhance dialogue, exchanges and cooperation in all areas, expand common interests of both sides, and properly handle new situations and new problems that emerge in bilateral ties, so as to push for sound and stable development of bilateral ties," Hu said.

Summers and Donilon said President Obama values relations with China and is committed to promoting the positive, cooperative and comprehensive U.S.-China relations for the 21st century. The two heads of state have held six successful meetings over the last 20 months, playing a significant role in pushing forward bilateral ties. They said the United States and China are influential countries in the world and that their cooperation is in both their interests and is crucial to global stability and prosperity. The United States hopes to work with China to strengthen high-level dialogue and exchanges and deepen cooperation in all areas while handling disputes with a pragmatic attitude, so as to promote new progress in U.S.-China relations, they said.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Finance Xie Xuren and other officials attended the meeting.
