Hu Jintao Holds Talks with Chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council Than Shwe

On the afternoon of September 8, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Than Shwe, chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council, at the Great Hall of the People. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern and reached broad consensus.

Hu said China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors and the two peoples have maintained close contacts and been friendly to each other since ancient times, adding the two countries have forged profound "Paukphaw" friendship. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties 60 years ago, China-Myanmar relations had withstood the tests of the ever-changing world with the meticulous care of generations of leaders of both sides. "Our bilateral relations have seen consolidation and growth ever since, and have set an example for friendly relations between countries with different social systems," said the Chinese president. Hu said China highly valued its relations with Myanmar, and it was an unswerving policy of China to solidify and develop good-neighborly and friendly cooperation with Myanmar. "The policy will remain unchanged regardless of changes of the international situation," he added.

Than Shwe said Myanmar and China are linked by mountains and rivers and the two peoples have long been friendly to each other and forged "Paukphaw" friendship. Than Shwe said since the establishment of diplomatic ties 60 years ago, the two countries have supported and understood each other, treated each other as equals and coexisted peacefully, with enhanced friendship and trust, frequent high-level visits and rapid growth of win-win cooperation in various areas. China has stuck to a peaceful development road, said the Myanmar top leader, adding China's position on major issues such as climate change fully reflected the interests and concerns of vast developing countries. He also reiterated his government's adherence to the one-China policy.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties. Hu suggested both sides take the chance to facilitate closer exchanges and cooperation in various areas. Hu proposed to keep regular contact between the two countries' leaders through visits and meetings on multilateral occasions, in a bid to maintain timely communication on bilateral ties and major issues of common concern. He also said it was important to carry forward China-Myanmar traditional friendship, maintain the consistency of China-Myanmar good-neighborly and friendly policy and push for sound development of East Asia cooperation. Both sides should step up efforts in formulating bilateral economic cooperation program to plan for and guide trade cooperation for mutual benefit. "China is willing to increase imports from Myanmar," he said, adding the Chinese market welcomes more investment from Myanmar enterprises. The cooperation between the two countries on energy, electric power, transportation and infrastructure construction will play the radiation role in promoting economic and social development of adjacent areas. Both sides should work closely to well implement key cooperation projects for the benefit of both countries and their peoples. The two countries share a border line of over 2,200 kilometers. Hu called on both sides to jointly safeguard peace and stability of the frontier and boost economic and social development of the border areas. "China respects sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar, understands and supports the Myanmar government's efforts for national reconciliation," Hu said. He vowed to enhance cooperation with Myanmar in border management and intensify efforts to jointly combat cross-border crimes for sound production and life order of the border regions.

Than Shwe said it is a set policy of the Myanmar government to further consolidate and develop friendly cooperative relations with China. Myanmar hoped to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties and join hands with China to lift the level of bilateral economic and trade cooperation, enhance cooperation in key areas including energy, agriculture and infrastructure construction and well implement the cooperation agreements signed by both sides. It was of vital importance for both countries to maintain peace and stability of the border areas. He pledged joint efforts with China to this end.

Prior to the talks, President Hu held a welcoming ceremony for Than Shwe at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairwoman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress Yan Junqi, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Sun Jiazheng, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party Central Committee Wang Jirong, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Transport Li Shenglin, Minister of Railways Liu Zhijun, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ye Dabo attended the ceremony.
