On the morning of June 17, 2002, President Jiang
Zemin met with Lithuanian Parliament Chairman Arturas
Paulauskas at the Lithuanian parliamentary building.
Paulauskas said that President Jiang's visit
is a major event in the Lithuania-China relations and proves
that China attaches importance to the friendly cooperative
relations with Lithuania. He believed Jiang's visit will
further increase the mutual understanding between the two
countries and promote their mutually beneficial cooperation.
Jiang said that his visit to Lithuania, short
as it is, is a well-rounded one. The Lithuanian people's
hospitality and their friendly feelings towards the Chinese
people impressed him deeply. Since the two countries forged
diplomatic relations 10 years ago, bilateral ties
have gained rapid progress, with close high-level contacts
and increasingly deepened cooperation in politics, economy,
culture, education and jurisdiction. Jiang said that he had
held a fruitful talk with President Adamkus. They reached
important consensus on the further development of bilateral
relations and exchanged views on international issues of
common concern. As a result, mutual understanding
and traditional friendship were deepened. Jiang also said
that China set store by the development of relations with
Lithuania and is ready to make joint efforts with Lithuania
to the end of developing and deepening bilateral friendly
and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Jiang said
that both the National People's Congress of China and the
parliament of Lithuania are legislative bodies of respective
countries. Exchanges between them constitute an important
part in bilateral political relations. In the recent years
exchanges between them are quite active, friendly groups in
the two parliaments have exchangedl visits and various
committees under the two parliaments have maintained
contacts. He welcomes more Lithuanian members of parliament
to visit China so as to increase the mutual understanding
and friendship between the two peoples.
Paulauskas said he totally agrees with Jiang's
positive comment on exchanges between the two parliaments
and reiterated that the parliament of Lithuania observes the
One China policy, attaches great importance to developing
relations with China and is willing to push forward
bilateral relations in the 21th century.
