Foreign Ministry Spokesperson's Response to questions asked by correspondents (2004/01/04)

Q: What's your comment on the remarks made by the US State Department Spokesperson on Hong Kong's reform, direct election and continuous democratization?

A: The Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs. China resolutely opposes to any foreign government's  interference in whatever form.

The Central Government of China closely follows the development of the political system of the Hong Kong SAR. Our principled position is a clear-cut one. The political system of the Hong Kong SAR should proceed from the real situation in Hong Kong and develop in a gradual manner in accordance with the Basic Law.

The US Government has on many occasions stated that it supports the Chinese Government's policy of "One Country, Two Systems" and that it doesn't intend to interfere in China's internal affairs. We call on the US side to honor its commitment and stop saying or doing anything detrimental to Hong Kong's stability and prosperity.
